POSITION SUMMARY
The role of Manager, Exploration – GoM Miocene and Cretaceous reports in to the VP for Exploration, GoM.

The candidate will lead the team responsible for the identification, capture, maturation and evaluation of opportunities in the Miocene and Cretaceous plays in the US GoM.  Hess is continuing to build a World Class Exploration organization and portfolio and this role will contribute to value creation through the successful discovery of new commercial opportunities in a proven and prolific salt basin. The candidate will also be responsible for the appraisal activity required to take an opportunity from discovery through to an initial development decision.  As well as the subsurface evaluation, the manager will have responsibility for all the above ground aspects required to assess and evaluate a GoM prospect including partnering, economic evaluations and regulatory requirements.

The main geographical focus of this role will be the deep-water US Gulf of Mexico. 

The position includes responsibility for leading a multi-disciplinary team to deliver robust sub-regional analysis, and detailed petroleum systems evaluation of the plays of interest. This focus of this role is the maturation of the licenses that Hess holds in Green Canyon and Mississippi Canyon.  Regional to prospect scale evaluation will lead to a ranked prospect inventory with the exploration wells planned for 2019 onwards. The candidate will be a proven commercial oil finder with a track record of portfolio management and prospect maturation to drilling. A desire to challenge existing models to seek new and innovative solutions to complex problems will be a major part of the role. Of particular importance will be the ability to lead a group of subsurface imaging experts variously located within the team, within the technology group at Hess and at our geophysical contractors, to utilize state of the art imaging techniques which will allow the identification and maturation of sub-salt opportunities.  

 

ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manage the team, and collaborate across the value chains to carry out geo-technical and commercial analyses; deliver a robust ranked prospect inventory for drilling in 2019.
  • Identify and make recommendations to evaluate, based on sound technical judgement, new venture opportunities that meet the Exploration business objectives.
  • Build and manage partner relationships as the acreage progresses towards drilling.
  • Manage integration of projects into the Global Exploration processes.
  • Direct the interpretation and integration of geophysical, geological and engineering information at basin, play and prospect scale.
  • Continue to drive new ideas and methodology into the subsurface characterization of the GOM
  • Work with specialists across the disciplines in the Technology & Excellence (T&E), Exploration Excellence, Drilling & Completions, as required to mature top prospects through the Hess maturation process to drilling and subsequent appraisal.
  • Make presentations to Peer Reviews, Value Assurance Reviews, Senior Management, and relevant Government Authorities as appropriate.
  • Mentor foundation phase, early career and senior geoscientists

QUALIFICATIONS
Experience

  • 15+ years of relevant experience.
  • Experience of the petroleum systems of the GoM required.
  • Strong leadership skills.
  • Excellent geotechnical understanding.
  • Good understanding of economic analysis.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills.
  • Ability to work within a collaborative environment and communicate at all levels and across business units.
  • Motivated, and a self-starter with a hard-working approach.
  • Proven ability to capture new acreage and a proven oil-finder
  • Promote/undertake work activities in a safe manner.

 

Education, Training & Certifications

  • B.Sc in Geoscience and M.Sc/PhD
