The Process Specialist coordinates the Lead Reliability Operators and Lead CROs according to the priorities established by the OIM and directed by the Operations Lead. S/he conducts assurance on all the activities.
The Process Specialist is also the delegate Operations Lead.   This role is a Rotator position for offshore Gulf of Mexico observing a 14/14 work schedule.




Primary Role

  • Assures compliance with Hess and Regulatory requirements
  • Responsible for optimizing production within operational envelopes and reduce unplanned losses for wells and facility
  • Provides tactical leadership, influence, and support to the RO, SRO, CROs to accomplish their accountabilities and develop their capabilities
  • Ensure Daily Meeting addresses: SQDC, Safety Hot Spots, Regulatory Hot Spots, Production Availability, Production Reliability, YTT and DNR and Daily Cost Review
  • Fills in for Operations Lead as needed


EHS & Regulatory Compliance


1)  Assures compliance with all Hess and Regulatory requirements including the following:

  • 30 CFR 250 Subpart O regulations.
  • The Hess MoC Process and implementation on the facility GOM-EHS-PRO-01004 Management of Change
  • The Hess PTW System and implementation on the facility and fulfill roles of Area Authority in the PTW system. This includes implementation of JSA, LOTO, Isolations, Inhibits & Overrides ( GOM-EHS-PRO-01001-3B GOM Permit to Work System (PTW) and GOM-EHS-PRO-01011-0 Safe Isolation and Reinstatement of Equipment and Plant Procedure)
  • The Hess SIMOPS plan and implementation on the facility

                - Review (Weather or force of nature), look for opportunities to improve activities. (Hurricane season, winter storms, summer calm, etc.)
                - Assess SIMOPS and activity plans to identify those that can be safely accomplished by the organization or reprioritize work to ensure safe execution.

  • Ensure that all incidents / near misses are reported and support the investigations in accordance with the EHS&SR Management System. Complete and own the approval and /or closure of Area Synergi (up to yellow) cases, and drive case management.
  • Accountable for conducting PSSR
  • Assure regulatory compliance (BSEE, USCG, ABS) and corrective actions are completed including all Regulatory Testing and Integrity Critical Maintenance for the facility and Wells
  • The Hess GoM Handover Standard for Hitch and Shift handovers is implemented on the facility (GOM-PRD-PRO-01001-0 GOM Handover Procedure)


2)  Ensure CROs, and Lead Reliability Operators and Reliability Operators meet the Hess competence standard requirements for the role and may act as Assessor or coach. GOM-CAT-PRO-01000-0 GOM Production Competence Assurance and Training (CAT) Procedure)


3)  Demonstrates positive EHS behaviors in all interactions offshore:

  • Engage in two-way dialogue with employees, contractors, and other stakeholders on EHS issues. Provide input into Employee and Contractor assessments – reinforce positive EHS behaviors


4)  Deliver improvement in EHS performance in the following areas:

  • Reduction in HIPO rate occurrence
  • Process Safety risks and elimination of hydrocarbon leaks or spills
  • Occupational health & safety risks to eliminate injuries/illness and reduce TRIR rates. Implementation of a behavioral based safety culture.
  • Management of environmental risks and reduction in spills/flaring volumes
  • Leadership Site Visits – ensuring a minimum of 20% time on site daily
  • Ensure follow up, and corrective/preventative actions are completed for reported hazards (in the behavioral based, “Safety Observation Card system) and incidents (through the Synergi action tracker).
  • Review proposed SOPs and SWPs applicable to the facility. Responsible for ensuring SOP’s are accurate and utilized


5)  Act as a member of the emergency response team:

  • Comply with the responsibilities assigned as defined in the Emergency Response Plan.
  • Participate in emergency response exercises to ensure a full understanding of the process and procedures.
  • Stand-in as On-Scene Commander as required. This will be subject to demonstrable competency in Emergency Management and having a current USCG OIM license.


Production and Cost Deliverables


1)  Coordinates the daily Production meeting (SQDC), ensuring; the promotion safe work behaviors, discuss safety/reliability/production hot spots, review production metrics and discuss special announcements/recognitions.

2)  Optimizes production within operational envelopes for wells and facility

  •  Reinforces overall facility operation in control room and response to events. Conducts assurance on CRO surveillance and responses.
  •  Reinforces and coaches Daily Production Reporting and reviews all reports assuring compliance to Production Loss reporting procedure.
  •  Serves as direct liaison with Onshore Process Engineers
  •  Participates in STPF Setting
  •  Monitors process metrics and implements countermeasures
  •  Ensures Well testing and surveillance requirements delivered. Monitors production using EBS
  •  Participates in Weekly Surveillance Call with Production Engineers and CROs to determine opportunities and track follow-up according to Asset Optimization Management System


3)  Reduces unplanned losses for wells and facility through

  •  Ensuring RCAs and 5Ys conducted for all production losses. Participate in RCAs or 5Ys requiring Production Operations input.
  •  Review area Production Reliability/Production Availability, look for opportunities to improve.
  •  Drives the creation and reinforcement of System Ownership (The aim of System Ownership is to establish a climate that promotes equipment or system ownership, which then builds into an ongoing process for maintenance and improvement. The system owner is responsible for equipment and process reliability and to validate that the operating strategies, maintenance strategies, and related requirements are implemented effectively and efficiently. This focus extends to the entire life of the equipment.) with Reliability Operators, craft and Maintenance Technicians including:

                - Defect Elimination
                - Implement the Autonomous Maintenance (AM) process in Area (Autonomous Maintenance activities are designed to involve operators in maintaining their equipment, which includes the following:
                       a)  Routine equipment inspection, lubrication, cleaning, and adjustment by the operator.
                       b)  Restoring equipment conditions, preventing deterioration, and detecting abnormalities at the earliest stages
                       c)  Keeping one’s equipment in good condition by oneself)
                 - Supports the Reliability Operator in implementing the AM Standard (i.e., printing labels, coordinating repairs, cleaning)
                 - Perform AM inspections (audits) to recognize achievements and progress, remove barriers, and identify training needs


4)  Reinforce delivery of PM, CM and Schedule compliance for Production Work Centers in SAP

  • Reviews / approves invoices
  • Participate in Daily Operations Meeting and YTT
  • Reinforce and coach quality notifications, encouraging pictures when available
  • Accountable for accuracy and completeness of WO completion/failure notes using audits/ spot checks/ exception reports
  • Ensures compliance with SIMOPS and Integrated Activity Planning requirements.
  • Coordinate with the Offshore Construction Supervisor on Construction Activities, Pre-Turnaround (TAR) and TAR activities to integrate Operations activities.
  • Assist in long-term planning of TAR directly related to Production and Maintenance.


5)  Ensure a Lean culture of continuous improvement implemented:

  • Ensure common improvement opportunities are implemented consistently within the area and across the crews
  • Drive efforts to eliminate defects, optimize the efficiency of operational processes and work execution at all levels, ensuring lean continuous improvement principles are applied where necessary.


6)  Approves Production discipline Work Orders ensuring costs estimated are accurate. Responds to any actions from Weekly Cost Review and cascades to reliability operators.


Competency/Skills Required

  • Comply with and meet HESS Corporation and regulatory competence requirements through completion. (Hess EHS Training Matrix)
  • Achieve and maintain individual competence in accordance with GoM Competency Assurance and Training.
  • Maintain a current USCG or be in the process of acquiring official USCG ‘OIM’ License
  • Hold OPITO OIM Managing Major Emergencies competency
  • Good analytical and problem-solving skills; work with minimal supervision; must be a self-starter.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work in a team-oriented environment.
  • Deepwater and subsea or floating facility experience desirable.
  • Effective written and oral communication skills.
  • Advanced knowledge of SAP or other computerized maintenance management systems.
  • Excellent oral/written communication and presentation skills

Day in a Life : Day to day safe and reliable operation of the wells, process and maintence equipment. Owns the facility operations and autonomous maintenance

  • 60% Gemba & 40% Desk time
  • Go make sure that the wells are operating properly and within operating limits
  •  Provide over-sight for the Reliabilty Operators that the topside equipment is working properly.
  •  Provide over-sight that Control Room Operators are operating the wells and HMI equipment in compliance and reliably.
  •  Risk assessments are completed
  •  Owns SempCheck and BSEE Compliance
