The Senior Manager, Communications is responsible for developing and implementing communication strategies and plans, both internal and external, for Hess’ Global Production business unit and assets in the Americas, Europe, Asia and Africa as well as for the company’s Midstream joint venture. The Houston-based position is part of a company-wide integrated unit that includes the Communications, Government Affairs and Social Responsibility functions, with a shared mission to protect and enhance our company’s license to operate and build preference for Hess as a trusted energy partner and responsible corporate citizen.
This position reports directly to the Director, Global Communications and is a member of the Global Production extended leadership team. The role has two Houston-based direct reports and one functional report in Kuala Lumpur, and also manages agency resources globally: 

  • Manager, Offshore & Developments Communication
  • Manager, Onshore Communications
  • Manager, External Affairs – Asia (functional)



The Senior Manager, Communications serves as the communications lead to Hess operating units regarding employee communications, media relations, issues management, crisis communications and overall reputation management. This involves working in partnership with business leaders, Planning, Human Resources, Legal, and other members of the External Affairs group and includes:

  • Developing and implementing communications with Global Production employees and contractors that drive business imperatives safely and fosters a culture of operational excellence.
  • Executing an external communications strategy to highlight operational capabilities and milestones with trade media and corporate citizenship in local communities; serving as a company media spokesperson; and overseeing activities of agencies in Houston, North Dakota, Copenhagen and KL.
  • Identifying and managing/mitigating reputation issues or risks in our operating areas and responding to operational incidents as communications lead.
  • Working closely with Government Affairs, Social Responsibility, and other internal partners on public policy initiatives, stakeholder management planning and community outreach.
  • Maintaining constructive relationships with key industry, trade and community groups, NGOs, third party advocates and trade and local reporters who cover our operations.
  • Serving as the communications lead for the company’s midstream joint venture, which is preparing for an IPO in 2017.



  • 10+ years of demonstrated success in organizational communications in the oil and gas industry for a publicly traded company or agency.
  • Outstanding functional communications skills including proven effectiveness in managing national, trade and local media; strong on both strategy and execution
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate complex business, financial, legal, regulatory and technical issues, and to quickly recognize and respond to opportunities and emerging issues
  • Highly experienced at building effective working relationships at all levels internally and externally.
  • Strong initiative and ownership for deliverables and deadlines as an individual contributor and as a leader overseeing direct reports, colleagues and outside vendors.
  • Excellent project management skills to carry out multiple programs/projects simultaneously
  • Proven ability to foster a collaborative team environment and develop direct reports to advance in the organization.
  • Able to travel as required (~25%), and willingness to work in a 24/7 business environment.


Education, Training & Certifications

  • Undergraduate or graduate degree in Communications or a related field.
