Position Summary

The Subsea Reliability Engineer will provide a range of engineering, technical, and operational support to the asset to optimize subsea equipment reliability and availability for the Gulf of Mexico (GOM) asset. Provides understanding of the critical subsea equipment and associated reliability processes to provide asset operations with subject matter expertise they do not have otherwise.


The Subsea Reliability Engineer is critical to enabling the GOM asset to achieve maximum value to the corporation, focusing on system reliability and availability. Core responsibilities include bad actor analytics, root cause analysis, and asset strategy management for subsea systems.


Roles & Responsibilities

  • Analyze/troubleshoot abnormal operating equipment and equipment failures, to establish and monitor reliability bad actors across the asset.
  • Facilitate/perform Root Cause Failure Analysis with focus on reliability bad actors with travel to vendor shops and offshore facilities as required. Report findings and failure cause, while identifying remedial and preventative actions.
  • Develop/build the subsea reliability engineering discipline and program for Gulf of Mexico Operations, leveraging existing Hess systems as well as discipline Technical Authorities for guidance and support.
  • Develop and optimize maintenance strategies and routines for subsea equipment and systems and associated topside support systems, examples include preventative, predictive, condition based maintenance, and evaluation of run to failure case.
  • Maintain and optimize equipment repair and spare strategies as well as subsea equipment standards based on value.
  • Develop and optimize reliability operating envelopes for subsea equipment/systems and associated topside support systems, perform regular audits of envelopes, and seek out equipment/process optimization
  • Manage subsea condition based monitoring and surveillance programs, leveraging key vendor interfaces (i.e. valve profiling, fluid usage, insulation resistance, water ingress, etc.)
    Adhere to LEAN work management processes to ensure work flows are efficient and waste is eliminated (i.e. SAP Notifications, etc.) and prioritize customer engagement through focused GEMBA visits.
  • Closely collaborate and support functions performed by technical authority within the Subsea Discipline with respect to Codes, Standards, Regulations, Management of Change, equipment specifications, maintenance, operation and brownfield projects.


  • 10+ years engineering experience supporting oil/gas production operations with heavy emphasis toward subsea discipline
  • Experience leading reliability programs and projects
  • Experience in system surveillance and condition based monitoring of systems
  • Experience in coordination and managing contractors within the Operations of subsea systems
  • Experience applying statistical tools to data analysis to identify "Bad Actor" equipment (i.e.: Reliability Modeling, SAP, Root Cause Analysis (RCA), etc.)

Education, Training & Certifications

  • Bachelor of Science in relevant engineering degree
  • Working knowledge and use of regulatory compliance and engineering standards (ASME, ASTM, API, OSHA, CFR and BSEE)
  • Current HUET or ability to pass HUET and obtain offshore medical/physical.
