This position is for an Exploration Geophysicist in Hess's Exploration Renewal team.

The team is responsible for maintaining a regional basin-wide geoscience framework to underpin all growth activities across the Atlantic Margins. To this end, margin/play scale highgrading regional workflows will be combined with targeted access opportunities (licence rounds/farm-ins).  The primary role of the Geophysical Advisor will be to deliver a complete geoscience evaluation of prospectivity at both regional and local levels leading to a recommendations for capture or deckline access.  In addition, the succesful candidate will be required to mentor junior team members and foundation geoscientists on rotation. Implicit requirements of the role will be the capacity to engage and develop a rapport with potential partners and government regulators in order to build trusted relationships that could lead to future joint ventures.  

The role requires advanced experience in 2D and 3D seismic interpretation.  Additionally,  sound working knowledge of depth conversion methods and quantitative geophysical evaluation at the play/prospect scale will be advantageous. A track record of prospect generation and capture is desired.

The position will utilize a mix of abilities that will integrate geoscience skillsets to better define access opportunities for Hess.  Data room evaluations consistent with the Hess preferred access strategy will include short deadline evaluations and sporadic international travel as needed. This position will have a high profile within Hess and be expected to turn-around evaluations under tight deadlines.   • Integration across diverse datasets
  • Ability to work across seismic datasets of variable vintages and quality – both in 2D and 3D space
  • Understanding of gravity and magnetic data (potential fields)
  • Plate to prospect scale interpretation
  • Comfortable working with limited datasets and maintaining an open mindset to new ideas and play concepts
  • Play-prospect evaluation of opportunities including sweet spot identification, prospect ranking and play refinement incorporating well results and appropriate analogues
  • Opportunity identification, evaluation and prospect maturation through to economic valuation working with Pre-Development team engineers
  • Probabilistic assessment of petroleum volumes, risk and working with Pre-Development to determine economic value and risk of multiple prospects with assurance from the Exploration Excellence team
  • Strong individual contributor, team player and technical leader
  • Effective project management with the ability to multi-task
  • Mentoring of colleagues and junior staff


  • Minimum of ten (10) years experience (15-20 preferred)
  • Track record of regional and new ventures experience, especially along Atlantic and Carribean Margins
  • History of acreage capture (via farm-ins or bid-rounds)
  • Extensive dataroom experience
  • Experience and expertise to include: subsurface mapping, well-seismic integration, cross sections, petroleum systems, probabilistic volumetrics and risking
  • Strong analytical and synthesis skills and commitment to continued learning and improvement
  • Strong communication (oral and written), interpersonal and collaboration skills
  • Comfortable with aggressive timelines and presenting to senoir leadership
  • Ability to manage projects with strong focus on delivery and results

Software Requirements

  • Highly skilled in a seismic interpretation platform including experience with 3D visualization (specifically Petrel)
    • Working knowledge across multiple platforms
  • ARCMap/GIS systems
  • Hampson-Russel or RockDoc
  • GeoX
  • Microsoft Office


  • Masters of Science, Geoscience required.  Degree in Geophysics preferred
