About the Job

As an advisor on the Advanced Analytics and Data Science team at Hess, you will lead design, architecture, and implementation of solutions that drive decision-making, execution and investments for our project initiatives across various areas of the business. The role will be responsible for contributing in an advisory context to a high-performing team and delivering end-to-end solutions to business problems that will pave the path to a data and insights-driven enterprise. Success requires strong leadership skills, first-principles problem-solving, a willingness to roll up your sleeves and a dedication to make the highest impact possible toward solution completion and value optimization. We are looking for someone who is eager to learn, comfortable with challenges outside of their preexisting expertise and comfort zones, that can think on their feet and thrive in a dynamic environment while ensuring the deepest level of business partnership to ensure an impactful solution delivery and continued business relationship growth.

 

This role will also help evangelize and advance the usage, engagement, and satisfaction of Advanced Analytics and Data Science offerings and will advocate for a customer-focused mindset within the analytics team.  This individual will be responsible for design, architecture, and implementation of delivering cutting-edge data science and machine learning products to internal customers, enabling them to make data-driven decisions and optimizing their preexisting processes. This individual will have the ability to shape and elevate the maturity and democratization of data analytics and machine learning capability and adoption across the organization.  They will be vital to extending and advancing the integration of machine learning and data science products into the core business model of Hess Oil Co.

Responsibilities

 

Analytics and Data Science

    • Serve as a principal data science expert to help drive the organization in the adoption and advancement of analytics and machine learning capabilities. This will be done through development and delivery of data science and analytics solutions and teaching the data science discipline to others.
    • Evangelize and lead the establishment of the data and analytics function by cultivating the power of data-driven insights into the organization through the development and continued expansion of the “Analytics Academy” education program.
    • Serve as an analytics expert for your stakeholders, helping them break down business problems and make better decisions using analytics.
    • Make critical recommendations and work closely with the business stakeholders to ensure coordination and successful solution delivery.
    • Oversee and implement software development, data science, and machine learning skillsets to contribute to the delivery of complex analytics and machine learning solutions.

 

Strategic Vision & Portfolio Delivery

    • Assist in collaboration with leaders across the organization to develop meaningful strategic directions and visions for the core team as well as democratize and scale data and analytics capability across the organization.
    • Engauge in an agile project delivery rhythm that continuously considers input from key business stakeholders and improves procedures based on learnings from prior iterations.

 

Leadership

    • Play an active role in our team’s leadership, taking initiative to execute and build upon our mission objectives toward the betterment and proliferation of data analytics and machine learning throughout the organization.
    • Work in collaboration with our external contract resources in both an advisory/mentor role and partnered collaborator.
    • Lead by example and assist in developing, implementing, and exemplifying best practices and streamlined processes,
    • Create and maintain a highly productive, professional, partnership focused, and value-driven culture.
    • Partner cross-functionally with leadership across the organization including Technology, Assets, and Service Delivery functions to ensure a cohesive vision and delivery of analytics solutions and capabilities.
    • Leverage differing skillsets and experiences of team members to create a whole greater than the sum of its parts and instill a positive, constructive, and collaborative culture across the team.

 

Minimum qualifications:
 

  • Bachelor's degree or above in Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, Engineering, Data Sciences, Physics or other physical sciences.
  • 7+ years of industry experience in physical sciences, data sciences, machine learning or engineering
  • 2+ years of experience with machine learning, data engineering, and model deployment
  • Proficient understanding of statistical, machine learning, and data science methodologies used to oversee, validate, and design data science solutions.
  • Comfortable at influencing without authority and passionate about people and mentorship in technical and scientific domains.
  • Ability to build clear and concise presentations and communicate effectively at every level of the organization including senior leadership (c-level and up).
  • Proven track record of building strong partnerships with business stakeholders to understand underlying business problems and translate business needs into technical requirements & solutions even in an ambiguous setting.
  • Strong ability to lead and implement data engineering, machine learning, and client facing technologies from research and development to product development to deployment and maintenance phases.
  • Strong technical computing proficiency in compiled or scripted languages (e.g. C/C++, C#, Python, SQL)
  • Strong conceptual understanding of software development principles and containerized deployment technologies.
  • Experience building cloud hosted solutions (e.g. Azure, AWS, etc..)

 

Preferred qualifications:
 

  • Master's or Ph.D degree with emphasis on coursework in Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, Engineering, Data Sciences, Physics or other physical sciences.
  • Experience in scripting with advanced SQL, extracting large sets of data, and design of ETL flows.
  • Experience with building machine learning models, model performance assessments, and optimization techniques.
  • Experience working in an agile project management environment.
  • Experience working with data science programming languages (e.g. Python) and associated packages (e.g. numpy, sklearn, pytorch, etc.).
  • Experience working with recent and leading-edge deep learning computer vision technologies a plus (e.g. gans, unet, resnet, etc.) a plus.
  • Experience working with compiled, object-oriented programming languages (c#, java, etc..) a plus.
  • Experience working with containerized service deployment (docker) and web hosted service frameworks (e.g. asp.net, django, flask, etc.) a plus.
  • Oil & Gas industry experience or equivalent in petroleum/reservoir/completions/drilling engineering or geosciences a plus.
  • Familiarity with Geology and Geoscience data, concepts and workflows
