Position Summary


This is an onshore land negotiations supervisor position working within a multidisciplinary unconventional resource development team. Thorough knowledge of onshore land activities is required, including land titles, negotiations, contracts, lease agreements, regulatory environment and joint ventures. This position requires someone with proven people management skills and experience including the ability to grow and develop talent, meet the challenges of a business demands, troubleshoot problems and bring forward solutions, and provide a work environment that is motivating, challenging and rewarding to all staff. Teamwork and execution of strategy are essential. The position within the land team will include direct supervision of land negotiators and land techs, and strong alignment with the division order, lease and contracts, and owner relations supervisors, all working with an asset team including engineering, geotechnical, financial, surface land, HSE, HR, and supply chain professionals, with the expectation of providing leadership and direction in the development and management of the negotiations team. 


  • Professional interaction with the upstream organization using good interpersonal skills, while being aligned to company goals and objectives, and embracing Hess Values.
  • Acquire oil and gas leases, title curative, and related agreements from mineral owners  
  • Draft, amend and interpret complex oil and gas leases.
  • Identify the need for, draft, and negotiate data trade agreements, acreage trades, confidentiality agreements, farmins/farmouts, and other agreements
  • Read title opinions and direct title curative or other activities as needed to protect company assets
  • Manage Unit and Well inventory for asset teams and prepare drilling locations for handoff to construction and drilling
  • Engage and assist on-the-ground teams with surface issues as they arise, which will include travel to the assets
  • Identify, recommend, and execute opportunities related to increasing asset value, top-leasing, joint venture partnerships, and other external opportunities
  • Review leases and contracts to ensure contemplated activities are permissible and advise/negotiate where issues with existing agreements can be improved for the company
  • Review and approve contractual agreements drafted by the team, providing improvement feedback as needed 
  • Understand current rules and proactively apply for changes to regulatory matters primarily related to field rules on well density, setbacks, reservoir definitions to facilitate development projects
  • Prepare and submit various state and federal filings, including annual plans of development, commercial well filings, unit expansion applications, location exceptions, commingling applications, etc., and company representation at state hearings.
  • Perform regular performance reviews with direct reports, and utilize individual development plans to ensure staff is provided learning opportunities to develop their knowledge and skills through internal and external resources including professional organizations. 
  • Supervise and direct activities of land negotiators and land techs as well as contract agents working in Houston, field offices and other locations, including managing the budget and spend of those activities
  • Maintain a high level of standards and visibility in all workflows, and actively seek out ways to improve efficiency of work within processes and policies 



  • 10+ years of related experience with an E&P operator with a preference for North Dakota/Bakken operations and title experience
  • Significant experience is required in: title, curative, leasing, permitting, contracts and project and people management with an operated asset
  • Ability to comprehend operational plans, proposals and strategies, and identify problems and opportunities for negotiations
  • Demonstrated experience with scheduling and forecasting work completion, budgeting and spend forecasting, and acreage reporting , 
  • Detailed knowledge of oil and gas operations, particularly onshore US unconventional development

Education, Training & Certifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Juris Doctorate or PLM Degree preferred

Plans, manages and closes the negotiation process including implementation of the contract, applies different negotiating styles, tactics and strategies
  • Contracts: Summarizes and communicates key legal issues and concepts including license regimes, legal precedents, regulatory environments and contract law. Detailed working knowledge of E&P contracts. Translates knowledge of contracts into business risk and value assessments
  • Influencing: Influences effectively with both internal and external partners, develops appropriate influencing strategies and styles to overcome blockages, Asserts ideas positively and persuasively, gaining support and commitment from others and mobilizing people to take action
