The Hess Technology Group seeks to transform our business performance through the application of innovation/technology and thrive in a continually disruptive world.  The group has defined four key technology focus areas (“Fab 4”) and 12 key problems to solve and is working with assets and functions to develop innovation and technology plans and programs.  In support of this effort, we are searching for a Houston-based candidate who will be a transformative agent – driving innovation and technology related to the delivery of safe and reliable wells (including Drilling, Completions and Well Interventions).


The responsibilities of this position include defining and implementing the innovation and technology strategy and tactics for wells.  This includes defining the future well visions related to autonomous operations; 10X productivity improvements/cost reductions; data utilization; and partnering/application of additive manufacturing/generative design.  The incumbent will develop the roadmap of technologies required to achieve the future visions and define priorities for pilots to experiment/learn/adopt the selected technologies. 


This role will integrate closely across the central technology team, Head of Wells, D&C leadership team, Head of Supply Chain, CIO, asset technology managers, Fab 4 point contacts, and digital enablement leader, as well as be the bridge to external providers ranging from large service companies to start-ups, open innovation sources and technology entities outside of the industry (e.g., NASA, medical,…). This position drives technologies related to modern/evolving operational and equipment developments in hard technology as well as digital technologies including data analytics/AI/IOT.  Responsibilities include working with asset technology appliers in developing alignment around the visions, technologies, tactics and pilots.


The initial focus of the position will include a project to identify current state of wells, future desired state/tie to fab four, gaps and prioritized areas for development. This role is focused on innovation/technology time horizons spanning from current day to 15 years out with emphasis on the development of breakthrough (combinatorial and transformational) technology (vs applied/continuous improvement).  While the role has no direct reports, it does require strong leadership and influence and will do so via the formal designation as the wells technology leader and strong networks inside and outside the company.



  • Network internally and externally (including outside of EP industry).  Build relationships and contacts in assets/IT, suppliers, competitors, start-ups, external industries
  • Scan for disruptive (transformative) and combinatorial (cultivate) technologies and partners to solve business problems and enable future visions
  • Lead the develop, articulation and alignment of the future vision for wells
  • Develop 24 month pilot roadmap for foundational and enabling technologies tied to vision. Propose technology product development and pilots
  • Develop pilot implementation plans and business alignment.  Track and support implementation.  Apply lean/agile/project management tools.
  • Conceive and evaluate economics and support pilot and scale-up justifications



  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience in Oil & Gas Operations
  • Broad understanding of core principles of Upstream business with specialist knowledge in (at least) the wells related functional
  • Demonstrated ability to develop novel approaches to complex problems. Ability to articulate and clearly communicate problems and solutions in a concise and logical manner
  • Free thinker with the ability to find alternatives to conventional methods or new ways of doing work

Education, Training & Certifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Sciences, Technology, Engineering, or Math is required; advanced degrees strongly preferred
