The Process Specialist (PS) monitors process metrics in order to drive stability through problem solving and process management by developing and modifying standard processes. Confirms operator and craft training and compliance with those standards. The PS assures compliance with Hess and regulatory requirements by owning the regulatory database, in order to assure a safe and efficient operation. The PS leads Lean activities and serves as a focal point between the Offshore operations team and the onshore discipline engineers.

  • The Process Specialist complies with Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) and regulatory requirements by:
  • Support and coaching to EHS team for incident investigations, developing quality 5 Whys, countermeasures, SQDCP dashboard visualization, tracking and closing actions, etc.
  • Assuring the asset control of work process is stable and effective.  Perform Leadership Site Visits for two-way dialogue with employees, contractors and other stakeholders during pre-job planning, Job Safety Analyses (JSAs), Toolbox Talks, simultaneous operations (SIMOPS) meeting and work execution.
  • Audits the Shift handover meeting to ensure effectiveness of handover process and supports continuous improvement.
  • Supports asset compliance with requirements in the Hess Operational Management System (HOMS). See Hess Operational Management System, EP-HOM-MAN-01000.
  • Responsible for compliance with applicable regulatory requirements including but not limited to the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), United States Coast Guard (USCG).
  • Owner of the regulatory database (SEMPCHECK).  Audits regulatory documentation of daily, weekly, monthly, annual requirements to ensure files and database are up-to-date and meet regulatory requirements in collaboration with EHS Specialist and Barge Supervisor.
  • Participation as a member of the Emergency Response Team, complying with responsibilities as defined by Emergency Response Plan.  Demonstrating competency by participating in emergency response exercises.
  • Assure the management of change process (MoC) is stable, effective and asset is in compliance with HOM’s expectations. 



  • The Process Specialist demonstrates commitment to Quality and high Reliability by:
  • Support asset 5 Whys for process breakdowns (EHS, process, equipment, human errors, work management, procurement, etc).
  • Assure the PSA3 problem solving RCFA process is followed, contains accurate information and countermeasures have a high likelihood of preventing future losses or failures
  • Supports development of Standard Work Instructions (SWI) on the asset to advance autonomous maintenance strategy and standardization of maintenance procedures. 
  • Assure operation compliance with plant “Basis of Design” and ability to identify operating conditions outside the design envelope.
  • Ability to support and coach others in the MoC process for changes in “basis of design” to assure plant reliability.
  • Participates in the yesterday, today, tomorrow (YTT) meetings to audit and assure the Hess Work Management procedure and workorder/notification quality metric are meeting targets and stable. 
  • Assure the planning and scheduling process is stable and in compliance with the work management procedure.
  • Assure the asset shutdown/turnaround planning rhythm process is effective and optimized to deliver the asset reliability/availability targets.  Audit the shutdown database to ensure it is current and accurately represents the “state of readiness” for shutdown coded work orders in SAP.
  • Participate in development of SQDCP dashboards, visualizing performance against targets, sub KPI’s breakdown gaps, include countermeasures to close gaps.



  • The Process Specialist demonstrates a commitment to Delivery by:
  • Support the asset weekly marketing/commercial guidance issued by Facilities Engineer.  Provide timely and accurate reporting to stakeholders (marketing, pipeline, terminal) of  off-spec commodity (oil, gas) quality issues (BSW, MEOH, water content, etc).
  • Assure welltesting and well surveillance quality standards are meeting stakeholder requirements.
  • Support the asset with identifying and driving continuous improvement projects in the plant in collaboration with PSE, FE, MRI team to improve plant performance, reliability and delivery.



  • The Process Specialist demonstrates commitment to the budget process and efficient utilization of capital by
  • Participate in “Cost Optimization” or deep dive workshops to eliminate waste, optimize OPEX resources, etc.  Leverage the SQDCP dashboard to measure continuous improvement.
  • Participate in preparation of annual operating expense (OPEX) budget.  Identify possible offshore training requirements in support of autonomous maintenance, continuous improvement initiatives, etc.



  • The PS has personnel responsibilities that include the following
  • Setting annual performance objectives that align with the annual business plan.  Maintaining an evergreen individual development (IDP) plan to enhance contribution and value to the enterprise.
  • Reviewing personal objectives and progress with the Offshore Installation Manager (OIM). 
  • Participating in Process Specialist Network meeting to assure consistency across GOM.
  • Supporting and developing Lean skills on the offshore asset by teaching and coaching 5 Whys problems solving, high quality standard work instructions (SWI), cause mapping, process mapping, PSA3 awareness training, CoS thinking, etc.
  • Identifying training needs within craft and operator discipline to develop skills and competency in support of autonomous maintenance program.



  • The PS shall possess competency and skills that include the following:
  • Complying with and meeting the Hess Corporation and Regulatory Competency Requirements for GoM. (Refer to the GoM Production Competence Assurance and Training (CAT) Procedure, GOM-CAT-PRO-01000 as well as the GoM Process Specialist Competency Standard, GOM-CAT-STD-01023 and the GoM EHS Training Procedure, GOM-EHS-PRO-01027.)
  • Obtaining and maintaining Helicopter Underwater Escape Training (HUET) 
  • Obtaining and maintaining a valid USCG Offshore Installation Manager (OIM) license is preferred, but not required
  • Obtaining and maintaining Production Safety Systems training (T-2) 
  • Obtaining an OIM Managing Major Emergencies competency as determined by the asset
  • Knowledge of Systems, Applications and Products (SAP) or other Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS)
  • Strong knowledge in well operation and production process from subsea to sales and overboard.
  • Ability to evaluate overall plant operating conditions and ensure compliance with basis of design and identify changes to ensure plant reliability.
  • Deepwater and subsea or floating facility experience is desirable
  • Advanced knowledge of process safety and the bow tie diagram
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work with minimal supervision in a diverse, multidiscipline, team-oriented environment.
  • Effective written and oral communication skills


Education, Training & Certifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Helicopter Underwater Escape Training (HUET) certification required
  • Production Safety Systems training (T-2) certification required
