The Houston-based position reports to the Bakken Subsurface Manager and will provide stimulation engineering support to the Subsurface Team. The position requires experience in classical hydraulic fracturing methods, hydraulic fracturing technology applications in unconventional reservoirs, hydraulic fracture diagnostics, stimulation economics, selection of fracturing fluid systems, proppant selection, rock mechanics and geomechanics, DFIT analysis, reservoir simulation techniques for hydraulic fracturing, and hydraulic fracturing field operations. The incumbent will be part of a multi-disciplinary team seeking to optimize the development strategy of the asset, requiring a mixture of completions, hydraulic fracturing, and reservoir engineering skills and experience.



  • Contribute to maximize asset value, with focus on optimizing completions and well spacing. Recommend production improvement opportunities using a combination of improved hydraulic fracture designs and completion techniques.
  • Work closely with area completion engineers and well stimulation technical authorities (TAs) to provide evaluation of and recommendations for stimulation fluid systems, proppants, and additives, with a focus on friction reducers and production enhancement chemicals (e.g. – acids, surfactants, and Nano-particles)
  • Support the reservoir engineering team to conduct well surveillance, including analysis of DFIT and fracture treatment data, step-down test, net pressure trends, screen-outs. Establish optimal workflows to help quantify stimulation performance.
  • Provide support for field experiments, including the comprehensive evaluation of numerous fracture diagnostics and subsequent integration with other tools (e.g. detailed reservoir simulations, RTA, data analytics)
  • Functional lead for data collection programs to reduce key hydraulic fracturing uncertainties, including Microseismic, DFITs, rock mechanics, fiber optics, proppant tracers, oil & water tracers, and step-down tests.
  • Provide hydraulic facture modeling support for reservoir engineering studies to construct and update reservoir models, including the development of model inputs such as rock mechanical and stress data, description of stimulation fluids and proppants, well construction and perforating details, model calibration using fracture diagnostics data (e.g. – Microseismic), and generation of simulation grids.
  • Leverage hydraulic and fracturing engineering expertise to build/update Machine Learning models to assist in predicting future well performance and improve understanding of fracture treatment behavior.
  • Provide one-on-one mentoring to less-experienced completion and stimulation engineers. Provide expert coaching to the asset engineers in conducting the appropriate hydraulic fracture modeling and evaluation studies. This could range from using analytic techniques to advanced hydraulic fracture modeling studies.
  • Ensure high quality standards for managing hydraulic fracture diagnostic data, ensuring consistency with Hess guidelines.


Experience: Required

  • 12 years of total industry experience is required along with 8+ years of experience in working with the application of hydraulic fracturing technologies in unconventional reservoirs.
  • Proficiency in using hydraulic fracture modeling tools, e.g. Fracpro, Stim-Plan, GOHFER, Kinetix.
  • Proficiency in interpretation and integration of robust data sets including microseismic, fluid tracers, pressure gauges, fiber optics, and production data to evaluate hydraulic fracture geometry, completion efficiency, and well performance.
  • Working knowledge of well surveillance tools, e.g. RTA, for identification of well performance characteristics and flow regimes
  • Working knowledge of reservoir simulation for unconventional reservoir performance, including the integration of hydraulic fractures modeling. Ability to build unconventional reservoir simulation models and history match production data with appropriate G&G and reservoir engineering (e.g. – reservoir fluid modeling and rock physics inputs from RE, geo-model provided by G&G). 
  • Working knowledge of Reservoir Engineering and Field Development Planning for Unconventional reservoirs, with a focus on optimizing completions and well spacing.
  • Effective interpersonal, communication (verbal and written), and influencing skills are highly desirable; ability to lead multidisciplinary projects and delivery quality work on time
  • Self-starter, able to work independently, collaborate fully as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Able to work in a fast-paced environment with tight deadlines.
  • Demonstrate track record of self-started initiatives to recommend production improvement opportunities through reservoir analysis techniques.

Experience: Preferred

  • 2+ years hydraulic fracturing and completions field operations experience.
  • Proficient with technical applications such as Kinetix, Fracpro, Eclipse, Intersect, Petrel, Excel, Kappa, Spotfire, and Predict-K.
  • Knowledge expertise of Predictive Analytics tools and techniques
  • OFM
  • Experience with SQL Server Management and SQL queries

Education, Training & Certifications

  • BS in Engineering is required (Chemical or Petroleum preferred)
  • MS Engineering degree is preferred
