The Data Science Team at Hess focuses on Artificial Intelligence (AI) with the overall goal of building powerful deep learning models. Data Scientist is expected to create innovative technologies through working on a diverse and stimulating range of projects, including development of various types of deep neural networks for prototype applications, and scale of deployable AI solutions to be embedded into commercial platforms for subsurface characterizations.

Having built an environment with passionate and engaging culture to provide an encouraging balance of structure and flexibility, Hess extremely encourages Data Scientists to collaborate with Geophysicists, Geologists, and Engineers from all disciplines within the exploration organization. This role is responsible for leading to reach ambitious creativity and the scope of creative breakthroughs for geophysical and geologic workflows through the integration of deep-learning approaches.



  • Develop and prototype deep learning models for subsurface data covering from large scale of 3D seismic data, well log, unstructured data, etc.
    • Experiment with new or early stage of deep learning algorithms
    • Solidify existing algorithms working with combination of various subsurface data
    • Maximize the quality of algorithmic results
    • Build data processing pipeline for deep learning tasks
    • Partner with Technology and Information departments to build industrial-strength code
  • Work collaboratively with Geoscientists in applying developed algorithms to solve challenging and high impact problems within the exploration and production domains
  • Provide innovative solutions to increase workflow efficiencies in areas where elements could be optimized and improved through artificial intelligence including but not limited to
    • Subsurface data quality control and fast visualization
    • Automation of traditional workflows in the exploration activities
    • Reduction of cycle times and improvement of the precision for subsurface interpretations
    • Enhancement of imaging quality of seismic data
    • Better leverage of various types of data
  • Build relationships that drive an innovative cultural shift and foster base level competencies of data science through leadership of a technical community
  • Work with external vendors and technology organizations to identify appropriate external resources such as joint industry projects, research consortia to enhance subsurface capabilities and improve digital capabilities
  • Pursue continuous learning through latest publications in the deep learning domain to keep up with academic and industrial trends, and ensure most of the advanced algorithms are leveraged and implemented



  • Minimum of 8 years total professional experience
    • Minimum of 3+ years of experience in the AI domains that have been applied to the fields of computer vision, speech recognition, natural language processing, or audio recognition
  • Advanced understanding of latest neural network architectures such as convolutional neural networks, deep generative models, recurrent neural networks, etc.
  • Master’s Degree and/or PhD in Computer Science, Mathematics, Electrical Engineering, or related quantitative fields required
  • A strong mathematical, statistical and machine learning background especially in the optimization theory, stochastic algorithms
  • Have good track records of architecting and developing deep learning models for computer vision in large scale industrial setup.
  • Understand research papers and be able to translate the ideas into efficient code
  • Python programming skills and experience with one or more deep learning frameworks such as TensorFlow or PyTorch
  • Experience in working with large data sets and developing data processing pipelines
  • Experience with GPU technology, CUDA programming, Linux
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills along with the ability to work in a dynamic, and product-oriented team
  • Recognized for technical leadership contributions, capable of self-direction and self-motivated, play well with others, and willingness to learn from and teach others
  • Real passion to work with domain experts and solve hard problems
  • Enjoy working in a highly collaborative environment
  • History of mentoring other scientists and interns is a plus
