The Senior Specialist, IT Emerging Technologies reports to Senior Manager of Digital Enablement and Architecture (DEA). This position is accountable for defining, coordinating, and improving the process to identify, rank, and enable the mid- to long-term breakthroughs that are necessary to fulfill both the CIO and the CTO missions for delivering value.

IT Emerging Technology falls within the mid- to long-term horizon, meaning that these capabilities will require development, testing, and integration to reach the point of maturity where they can be implemented at Hess.  Example capabilities within IT’s remit include but are not limited to hybrid computing, high performance computing, advanced analytics beyond machine learning, open source code, and immersive technologies. Additional capabilities may enable the CTO’s remit for delivering operational value, such as quantum computing and blockchain. Given that IT Emerging Technologies do indeed evolve, the position requires the ability to learn voraciously and continually. This position does not require demonstrated experience with the above capabilities or others in emerging technology, but rather the potential to learn and to constructively apply that learning.

The ultimate reason for identifying, ranking, and enabling with these mid- to long-term technologies is to continue Hess’ position as Best Performing Energy Investment. The result will be a value-driven and pragmatic prioritization of IT Emerging Technologies to complement the near-term capabilities and technologies already included in IT’s strategy. This requires building understanding of needed technology capabilities for other stakeholder teams, while also collaborating across IT teams to identify implications of these emerging technologies.  This collaboration ensures that relevant IT teams are themselves ready to integrate, adopt, and deploy any IT Emerging Technologies.

Identifying involves scouting both technology capability and the vendor landscape.  This is accomplished by self-directed learning, collaboration with Hess subject matter experts, and external engagement. External engagement includes a broad range of startups, venture capital funds, universities, research entities, traditional suppliers, and technology providers across industries. As a result of this, the Senior Specialist will collect input to build an emerging technology radar depicting the current and likely future state of IT Emerging Technologies.

Ranking involves facilitating and documenting Hess’ rationale for pursuing a subset of these IT Emerging Technologies, in close collaboration with Enterprise Architecture and other IT teams. A key requirement for this role is building consensus with stakeholders in DEA, IT, CTO, and across Hess.

Enabling involves concisely communicating the case for value across peer, management, and executive stakeholders and then developing the implementation plan with appropriate owning teams. This may include identifying updates to our IT Strategy to reflect priority emerging technologies. And it may include identifying updates to affected IT sub-strategies or those of the assets, functions, and CTO teams in partnership with Enterprise Architecture.

The successful candidate for Senior Specialist IT Emerging Technologies should be a passionate learner, a pragmatic technologist, an ardent collaborator, and an empathetic communicator. The pace of change in technology requires comfort with the uncertainty that accompanies mid-to long-term IT emerging technologies.

  • Minimum 5-7 years’ experience in industries with significant physical assets and operations, such as manufacturing, aviation, mining, or energy
  • Continuous learner focused on applying and communicating knowledge
  • Actively shares best practices and is a team player
  • Experience in learning about technologies through formal and informal methods, including Hess subject matter experts
  • Ability to define, check, and adjust process for identifying, ranking, and enabling new technologies
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, including the ability to explain the uncertainties of IT Emerging Technologies and the case for value across all levels of the organization
  • Ability to build and expand collaborative internal network of subject matter experts
  • Ability to build and expand external network across and beyond the industry
  • Comfort with influencing and creating consensus with senior subject matter experts
