POSITION SUMMARY

The purpose of the Continuous Improvement Advisor role is to help strategic contractors develop skills to drive improvements in safety, quality, delivery, and cost performance.  The role involves training and coaching of contractors – as well as facilitation of improvement activities to help them understand and apply the methods described in the Hess Supplier-Contractor Development & Performance Improvement Process booklet. The position is expected to spend a significant amount of time in the field and at contractor locations working closely with key contractors to help them understand and begin to facilitate improvements on their own. This role is expected to understand basic lean concepts, including standards and standard work, training and coaching, structured problem-solving, 5S, kaizen, waste identification/reduction, process mapping, and to deepen technical and lean skills while in the position.

The position will also be expected to provide internal coaching to Hess team members, as needed, to help the company continue its lean journey – as well as ensure Hess understands and practices its role as a partner in improving contractor performance. Besides regular coaching from the Director of Operations, this role is closely connected and coached by the Bakken Senior Lean Advisor and will work closely with the Senior Managers responsible for the processes where critical contractors perform work.

 

ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES

The primary areas of focus for this role include: 

  • Spend time with key suppliers/contractors to learn processes they perform for Hess, specifically those related to the Bakken performance improvement plans.
  • Provide support to contractors in the development, sustainability, and continuous improvement of standards and standard work for critical processes.
  • Aid in the development of dashboards that determine key performance indicators (KPIs), identify gaps, breakdown the gaps, and show the countermeasures being taken to close the gaps in accordance with the Hess dashboard standard.
  • Coach contractors in the implementation of operating rhythm meetings to improve performance by reviewing/discussing dashboards to identify and address problems and ensure help is provided where needed.
  • Help contractors address issues through structured problem-solving.
  • Help contractor and contractor team members learn to identify and reduce waste on a continual basis (i.e. drive daily improvement).  The intent is to develop a robust kaizen culture whereby the workforce continuously looks for ways to make their jobs easier
  • Conduct process mapping and value stream mapping workshops, as needed, to improve critical processes.
  • Work with Bakken Operations Director, Operations Managers, and leaders of key suppliers/contractors to identify performance improvement targets based on the asset plans.
  • Learn to coach – not tell – others through daily interaction and continual practice, as they develop ideas for improvement.
  • Continue to develop lean skills through a variety of methods, including interaction with Operations Managers, Director, and Lean Advisors.
  • Participate in and present updates, as needed, to bring Hess team members up-to-date on contractor improvement activities and results.

Work Environment

  • Office based role (Minot / Tioga) 5/2 (9/80) work schedule.  Expectations for this role include significant time in the field and at contractor offices.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

 Experience

  • 5+ years of experience actively applying TPS/lean skills and behaviors, preferably in a project/process environment.
  • 7+ years of experience in a leadership role.
  • Proficient in using Microsoft Office.
  • Possess strong written and verbal communications skills with ability to lead, coach, and train others.
  • Deep understanding of a variety of lean methods, including structured problem-solving (preferably utilizing Toyota’s 8-step problem-solving), standards and standard work, hoshin kanri, value stream mapping, and 5S.
  • Excellent collaboration and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Strong analytical, technical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Able to work in fast-paced, constantly changing production environment.
  • Strong organization, time management, prioritization and planning skills and able to manage multiple tasks with tight deadlines for self and team.

 

Education & Training

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred
