Roles & Responsibilities
The Condition Based Maintenance (CBM) Lead Specialist is responsible for the development, implementation, and management of Condition Monitoring (CBM) for critical surface equipment across upstream and midstream to improve equipment reliability and productivity in support of the asset's safety, environmental, production, and cost targets for the asset. Working in a team environment, it carries responsibilities for implementing reliability best practices, developing, and optimizing preventive maintenance tasks, and supporting maintenance activities. This role is a key member of the Reliability Engineering team and works closely with multiple other teams including Operations, Maintenance, Upstream/Midstream Reliability Engineering, Integrity, Infrastructure, EHS, Finance, GSC, Technical Authority network, and the Technology team.
Operational Control
- Leads safety culture including ensuring the embedment of Hess safety procedures, best practices, and standard work. This includes but isn't limited to strong pre-job planning, recognition and management of hazards introduced from evolving job scopes, daily after-action reviews, strong safety meeting participation, recognition of positive safety behaviors, accident investigations, safety audits and related activities
- Work with reliability engineering and craft specialists to develop and implement preventative maintenance procedures and condition-based monitoring program with recommendations to eliminate future equipment problems. Program examples include oil sampling, vibration monitoring, performance data monitoring, thermography, engine emission analysis, motor circuit analysis, and acoustic monitoring
- Directs condition monitoring, reliability, and performance evaluation for all critical upstream and midstream equipment
- Oversees condition monitoring data analysis for equipment, generate reports and initiate necessary corrective and preventative actions
- Monitors and improves performance for inspection and/or repairs ensuring that assigned jobs adhere to standards, processes, and procedures
- Primary liaison with contractors on specialized CBM techniques. Accountable for contractor performance against contract terms
- Assists in pre/post preventative and corrective maintenance monitoring to assess value of maintenance activities
- Leads and participates in incident investigations and root cause analysis
- Oversees implementation of surveillance equipment including operating and capital expenses. This includes partnering with Technology team to identify and test new / improved monitoring capabilities
- Works with engineering leadership with developing the annual budget and monthly forecast
- Provide assistance in the field during facility startups, shutdowns, or upsets
- Performs other duties related to this function to help ensure the ongoing reliability of asset equipment
Continuous Improvement
- Collaborates with other asset / enterprise subject matter experts to develop and implement multi-year strategic plan for condition monitoring
- Collaborates with maintenance specialists, reliability engineering, planning, and leadership to ensure proper priorities are placed on deficiencies and continuous learning/improvement process is fostered
- Demonstrates strong continuous improvement capabilities and/or ability to learn following skills:
- Lead standardized work and process development; continuously seek to make standardized work and processes more efficient and safer while ensuring work quality
- Lead structured problem solving using 5-Whys and Problem Solving A3s
- Supports engineering leadership with developing / maintaining key maintenance KPIs
- Develop robust kaizen culture through direction setting and empowering team members to look for ways to make their jobs easier
Leadership / People Development
- Ensure further development of all team members through performance evaluation, development of training plans, feedback, and coaching. Work with Competency Assurance and Learning (CAL) to update training matrices, schedule any needed training, and assure training is effective and corrects sub-standard performance.
- Assign tasks and training considering each technicians development and career goals
- Provide direction to team members emphasizing quality, efficiency, productivity, cost reduction, environment/health/safety, and morale.

Work Environment
- Field based role (Tioga) 5/2 (9/80) work schedule. Expectations for this role include a heavy field presence to ensure jobs are being performed safely and the workforce is trained properly
Experience/Skills
- 7+ years of experience in refining, petrochemical, oil and gas industry experience or equivalent industry related experience such as energy, military maintenance, mining, or other heavy manufacturing.
- 2+ years of leadership experience as formal people leader in production environment preferred
- Desired certifications or at least demonstrated ability to attain:
- Level II certification vibration analysis
- Lubrication analysis
- CMRP or CMRT
- Basic proficiency in the following areas with the ability to develop into a subject matter expert in particular areas:
- Knowledge of industry codes, standards, and processes (e.g. ASME, API, ANSI, FMEA)
- Rotating equipment (pumps, turbines, compressors, blowers, gearboxes, etc.)
- Fixed equipment (piping, heat exchangers, vessels)
- Electrical and instrumentation equipment such as motors, motor control centers, generators, and process instrumentation (transmitters, valves, controllers, etc.)
- Equipment diagnostics and repair
- Component failure analysis
- Root cause analysis
- Reliability data analysis & data analytics
- RCM based Predictive and Preventive Maintenance strategies
- Strong knowledge of work management system, corrective/preventative maintenance planning, and equipment master data utilization
- Strong knowledge of applicable EHS procedures/practices such as Permit to Work, Energy Isolation, Respiratory Protection, PPE, Emergency Response
- Proficient computer skills / business system knowledge (SAP, Spotfire, Microsoft Suite)
- Possess strong written and verbal communications skills with ability to lead, coach, and train others
- Excellent collaboration and interpersonal communication skills
- Strong analytical, technical, and problem-solving skills
- Able to work in fast-paced, constantly changing production environment
- Must be available outside normal working hours for technical support if needed
- Strong organization, time management, prioritization and planning skills and able to manage multiple tasks with tight deadlines for self and team
Education/Training
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Associates or bachelor’s degree preferred
