Roles & Responsibilities:


Under limited supervision, performs a multitude of field automation duties for Bakken Upstream and Midstream assets. This role will serve as a subject matter expert on implementation of field based automation solutions, provide oversight and technical assistance with troubleshooting efforts, and will support a variety of PLC and field automation related projects. This field leadership position will provide a strong focus on standardized processes, continuous improvement, safe delivery of project and maintenance activities, and adherence to the  Hess Process Control Domain (PCD) cyber security standard. Development of integrated workflows with key stakeholder groups is required, including but not limited to Operational Technology, I&E, Cyber Security, and Operations.


The primary areas of focus will include the following:

  • Operational Control
    • Drives embedment of Hess safety procedures, best practices and standard work as defined by the expectation of a safety leader.  This includes ensuring compliance with company safety policies and procedures, as well as, lead, perform, and/or participate in 5S, accident investigation, safety audits and related activities 
    • Acts as the first line of technical support in problem resolution for a variety of Automation systems
    • Provides technical knowledge, leadership, and skill in support of special projects
    • Supports Cyber Security initiatives as required
    • Helps prepare, as necessary, accurate and complete documentation for end-user products and systems including instructions, processes, and procedures
    • Maintains integrity of control network and program repository
    • Maintains field automation component obsolescence awareness and performs replacement option feasibility analysis
  • Standard Work / Abnormality Management
    • Provide leadership behavior and people development support to ensure standard processes and disciplined value stream management are maintained; namely
      • Perform leader connected checking through Auditing of existing standards on agreed upon frequency
      • Develop Mentor / Coach relationships to ensure understanding and adherence to MOC requirements by internal and contract team members.
  • Continuous Improvement
    • Learn, embrace, implement, and teach/coach team members with a primary focus being on standard work development (not to be confused with SWIs), 5-Whys, and Problem Solving A3s to:
      • Reduce process variation
      • Reduce unevenness in work (level out through prioritization and scheduling)

           Work Environment

  • Field based role (Tioga) 5/2 (9/80) work schedule.



Demonstrates knowledge of the following:

  • Expertise with Control Systems in a Process Control Domains (PCD) environment. Allen Bradley and/or Honeywell DCS preferred)
  • Experience with network data communications including TCP/IP, client/server functions, and hardware/software architectures
  • Working knowledge of IP addresses schema, user account set-ups, permissions and policies and emerging technologies
  • Working knowledge of field automation components including but not limited to PLC and HMI hardware and software (Honeywell Safety Manager, RS Logix, FactoryTalk), system communications, and troubleshooting techniques


Demonstrates knowledge of and/or ability to learn following skills:

  • Experience in system optimization providing a reliable, scalable, and sustainable environment to minimize data loss and ensure high data integrity
  • Working knowledge of IP addresses schema, user account set-ups, permissions and policies and emerging technologies
  • Ability to effectively analyze the impact of enhancements and product upgrades and implement changes in a process managed manner
  • Basic knowledge/experience with SAP work management tool
  • Strong analytical, technical, and problem-solving skills
  • Strong organization, time management, prioritization and planning skills and able to manage multiple tasks with tight deadlines for self and team



  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Associates or technical degree preferred.
  • Must have valid driver’s license.
